What is EMDR Therapy? | Deep Feels Therapy

Curious about what EMDR therapy is and if it is right for you? This post will give you an overview of what EMDR is and when it is used.

EMDR Therapy in Fresno CA

Trauma-informed therapy for the memories that still hurt.

You don’t have to keep reliving the past to heal from it.

EMDR can help your brain and body process experiences that may still feel stuck; so you can feel more grounded, present, and connected to yourself.

EMDR is a different way of healing from traumatic experiences.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

EMDR is a trauma-focused therapy that helps your brain process distressing experiences that may feel unresolved.

Sometimes, our brains don’t fully process difficult or overwhelming experiences when they happen. The memories can remain connected to intense emotions, body sensations, beliefs, or reactions.

Even when you know you’re safe now, your nervous system may still respond as though you’re back in the past.

EMDR can help create space between what happened then and what is happening now.

How Can EMDR Help?

EMDR may be helpful for experiences such as:

  • Trauma and complex trauma

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Childhood or relational wounds

  • Difficult life experiences

  • Grief and loss

  • Accidents or other distressing events

  • Relationship experiences

  • Shame or negative self-beliefs

  • Feeling “stuck” in the past

  • Stress related to major life transitions

You don’t have to have one single traumatic event for EMDR to be helpful.

Sometimes the things that shape us happen gradually through repeated experiences, relationships, or environments.

What Happens During EMDR?

EMDR isn’t simply talking about your trauma over and over.

Your therapist will first help you develop safety, grounding, and coping skills so you have tools to manage difficult emotions.

When you’re ready, your therapist will guide you through recalling aspects of a difficult experience while using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating taps.

This process can help your brain reprocess the memory.

Over time, the goal is for the memory to feel less emotionally overwhelming and for you to develop more helpful, compassionate beliefs about yourself.

You remain in control throughout the process.

Will I Have to Talk About EVERYTHING?

No.

EMDR does not require you to share every detail of an experience.

Your therapist will work with you at a pace that feels manageable.

Here at Deep Feels Therapy, we will not force you through something before you’re ready.

At Deep Feels Therapy, we believe you don’t have to rush your healing to make progress.

What Might EMDR Feel Like?

Everyone’s experience is different.

During or after EMDR, you may notice:

  • Memories becoming less vivid or intense

  • Changes in emotions or body sensations

  • New perspectives about yourself or what happened

  • Increased awareness of patterns

  • Feeling more connected to the present

  • A sense that something feels “different” about the memory

Sometimes processing continues between sessions. Your therapist can help you understand what you’re noticing and support you along the way.

Is EMDR Right For Me?

EMDR isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Your therapist will consider your current needs, history, nervous system capacity, goals, and readiness before deciding whether EMDR is appropriate.

Sometimes the first step isn’t processing trauma.

Sometimes the first step is simply learning how to feel safe enough to begin.

That’s okay.
